Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the remark in reaction to comments by former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, who recently predicted that Tinubu would not secure a second term in 2027.
El-Rufai, in a Channels Television interview on Sunday, argued that the President lacked a pathway to victory and could finish third in a runoff. He compared Tinubu’s chances to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s loss in 2015, despite holding state resources and security backing.
But Onanuga, in a statement via his X handle, accused el-Rufai of double standards, noting that the former governor had previously said four years was insufficient for any leader to deliver meaningful change.
“Yet, he is now at the forefront of desperate politicians plotting Tinubu’s ouster just two years into his tenure. What a contradiction!” Onanuga wrote.
The presidential aide maintained that Tinubu had already achieved significant progress, citing increased foreign reserves, harmonisation of exchange rates, stock market growth, four months of declining inflation, and reforms in education and social welfare. He noted that governors and local governments were also receiving unprecedented allocations for projects and job creation.
Onanuga insisted that those pushing for Tinubu’s removal were only acting out of frustration and irrelevance. He added that el-Rufai’s own statements would be used against him in future political campaigns.
“Please save the video. We shall confront Nasir with it when electioneering starts,” he wrote.
