Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged traditional rulers in the Oke-Ogun zone and other parts of the state to exercise caution when issuing mining licenses. During a recent event, Makinde emphasized the potential environmental challenges that could arise from illegal mining activities in the near future. He made this statement at the funeral ceremony of Victoria Omolayo Oni, stepmother of Abiodun Oni, who serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals Development and Chairman of the Oyo State Solid Minerals Development Agency.
Makinde highlighted his administration's commitment to infrastructure development to drive economic growth, mentioning the ongoing Saki-Ogboro-Igboho Road project, which aims to connect multiple local government areas. Once completed, this road will link Saki West, Saki East, and Oorelope LGs, with plans to extend it to Agbonle in Saki East, Igbeti in Olorunsogo LG, and Kisi in Irepo LG. The governor believes that connecting these areas will significantly enhance economic vitality.
Additionally, Makinde reaffirmed his promise to construct an airstrip in Igbeti for security surveillance and to rehabilitate and equip the Igbeti General Hospital. He revealed that the idea of improving road connectivity in the region dates back to 1984 when he visited Igbeti as a young boy and observed the locals' difficulty in traveling due to poor road conditions. He expressed confidence that by connecting Iseyin to Saki and extending roads to Ogboro, Igboho, and Igbeti, about 80% of the desired regional connectivity would be achieved, thereby boosting the local economy.
