Senior members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have pledged to resist any attempt to impose candidates for key positions in the 2027 elections, warning that doing so could repeat the mistakes that cost them in 2023.
A prominent party chieftain, Akeem Agbaje, speaking in Ibadan, emphasized that enforcing imposed candidacies undermines internal democracy and erodes trust among grassroots members. He noted that rumours are already circulating of certain aspirants claiming endorsement from the party’s national leadership.
Agbaje insisted that all aspirants must engage the party membership fairly at the local and state levels rather than relying on top-down selections. He warned that imposition without grassroots support risks another election loss.
The chieftain also raised concerns about early endorsement rumours and unconfirmed claims, urging the party to ensure transparency in primary processes. According to him, the APC must pick candidates acceptable to its communities to restore unity and to win back confidence.
Recognizing that past losses stemmed in part from imposed candidates who lacked broad support, the APC leadership in Oyo is calling for credible, open primaries, free from undue influence, with engagement of all stakeholders.
