Omokri: Unfair for Muslims to Work Full Fridays While Sundays Remain Free

In a video shared on his Facebook page on Friday, Omokri argued that the current arrangement—where Sundays are designated work-free while Fridays remain full working days—puts Muslims at a disadvantage.

He noted that before colonial rule, Fridays were traditionally regarded as a day of rest for Muslims.

“I don’t think it is fair for the Muslim Ummah for us to have Friday as a working day in Nigeria. Originally, before colonialism, it was not like that,” he said.

Omokri proposed that government offices close by midday on Fridays to allow Muslim faithful attend Juma’at prayers. He suggested extending working hours from Monday to Thursday to offset the shorter Friday schedule, stressing that such an adjustment would not reduce national productivity.

“The time we are going to lose on Friday we are going to gain it back from Monday to Thursday. So it is not going to affect our productivity as a country and our GDP. And then the Muslim Ummah can close at 12 noon and go for Solat Jumaat,” he explained.

According to him, the move would create a fairer balance between religious obligations and Nigeria’s work structure, fostering inclusivity for both Christians and Muslims.
