Several political parties and civic groups have outlined their demands and expectations of Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as he awaits Senate screening to become the substantive Chairman of INEC. His nomination was already approved by the Council of State and is expected to be forwarded to the National Assembly.
Among those voicing expectations are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Obidients Movement, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Northern Ethnic Nationalities Forum (NENF), and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State. They say the new INEC chief must restore public confidence, act independently, and deliver credible elections.
The ADC urged Amupitan to be loyal to Nigerians rather than any political party or government that appointed him. They see in this role the opportunity for him to go down in history as a “free, fair, and credible” electoral umpire rather than a partisan tool.
Governor Mutfwang described Amupitan as a detribalised intellectual and patriotic choice, praising the President’s decision for reflecting regional balance. He expressed confidence that Amupitan will bring integrity and excellence to the position.
NENF also welcomed the appointment, declaring it a step toward deeper democracy. It endorsed Amupitan’s record of service and called for neutrality, transparency, and fairness in his tenure.
The Obidients Movement listed reforms it expects: a reformed Electoral Act, improved election credibility, and stronger protections for independent candidates. They urged that INEC under Amupitan should become a reliable institution trusted by all Nigerians.
CUPP placed immediate priority on rebuilding public trust in INEC, saying the institution’s credibility has been badly damaged by past election controversies. They see Amupitan’s apolitical profile as key to restoring confidence.
As the Senate prepares to screen him, all eyes will be on how well he navigates demands and transforms expectations into action.
