FG steps in to avert NUPENG strike, calls conciliation meeting with Dangote

Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, disclosed on Sunday that all concerned parties have been invited to a conciliation meeting in Abuja.

According to a statement by the ministry’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Patience Onuobia, the intervention is aimed at easing tensions over allegations of anti-unionisation practices at the refinery.

“I have invited all the parties for a conciliation meeting tomorrow, Monday, September 8, 2025. Since I have intervened, I plead with NUPENG to rescind their decision to shut down the petroleum sector from tomorrow. I also appeal to the NLC to withdraw the red alert issued to its affiliates,” Dingyadi said.

The minister cautioned that industrial action in the oil and gas sector would trigger nationwide hardship and cause huge revenue losses. He stressed the importance of allowing dialogue to resolve the matter amicably.

Earlier, NUPENG had announced plans to down tools over Dangote Refinery’s decision to import 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks for direct fuel distribution. The union alleged that the company’s refusal to allow new drivers to unionise posed a direct threat to its Petroleum and Tanker Drivers branch.
