APC to Makinde: Your Plan to Hand Over Oyo's Vault to Atiku Will Be Resisted

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to Governor Seyi Makinde, alleging that he has entered into a "political contract" to finance the 2027 presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar using the state’s resources. The opposition party raised the alarm following reports of a closed-door meeting between Makinde and Atiku at the Minna residence of former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, on Tuesday.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC claimed that the meeting solidified plans for a joint Atiku/Makinde presidential ticket on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The party described the alleged alliance as a "betrayal game" and a desperate move by both politicians, accusing them of trying to "dance on the grave" of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which they helped weaken in previous election cycles.

"Atiku Abubakar... has a penchant for making some southern governors sponsor his ill-conceived presidential ambition with their state funds just like he did in 2023," Sadare stated. The APC further alleged that Atiku is using this alliance to punish Makinde for past political sins, predicting that the Governor would end up the "worse loser."

The opposition party specifically warned against a purported N10 billion down payment to secure the Vice Presidential slot for Makinde. "The Pacesetter state cannot afford to open its Vault to somebody like Atiku again... We say no to the payment of a N10 billion down payment by Gov. Makinde... He shall be vehemently resisted this time," the statement concluded.
