Afobaje Performs Sacred Akoko Rite for Ladoja Ahead of Coronation

Ibadan witnessed another historic step in its rich cultural tradition today as the Afobaje of Ibadanland, Chief Waheed Popoola, placed the sacred Akoko leaves on Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, marking his formal preparation to ascend the throne as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The Akoko ritual, an age-long practice in Yoruba kingship, symbolizes divine approval, ancestral blessing, and community acceptance. It is a moment regarded as one of the most important rites before the crowning of any Olubadan.

The ceremony, carried out with great reverence, has further heightened anticipation for the grand coronation, expected to draw traditional leaders, political figures, and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond.

Observers note that the ritual is not just symbolic but also underscores the enduring strength of Ibadan’s tradition, ensuring continuity even in a modern era.

As preparations intensify, all eyes remain on Mapo Hall, where the city is set to celebrate a historic coronation that will once again blend culture, history, and unity.
